Today is Heritage Day in South Africa, which is a public holiday in which South Africans across the spectrum are encouraged to celebrate their culture and the diversity of their beliefs and traditions, in the wider context of a nation that belongs to all its people. Since it was a holiday and most things were closed, we spent the holiday in a day of service at Jerusalem; an orphanage for children. The Center is owned and ran by Mama Vinqi and her husband. The children are taught by Nobum, who prepares them for Grade R (Readiness) Prof (as Dr. Murphy is known in South Africa) gave the children a lesson on animals The children sang their National Anthem to us and we sang nursery rhymes with them. We helped Mama Vinqi prepare lunch and we ate with them. Nisha, a member of our group, celebrated her 21st Birthday on this date. We had a birthday cake for her and the children sang “Happy Birthday” to her.
